Derringer

The term "derringer" derives from a misspelling of the last name of Henry Deringer, a famous maker of small pocket pistols in the 1800s. Deringer's popular design was copied by gun makers across the globe, and "derringer" soon became a generic term for any pocket pistol. Derringers, which are usually the smallest handguns of a given caliber, are especially popular among women because they can be easily concealed in a purse or stocking. Sweetener May Help Prevent Cavities

Xylitol, a naturally-occurring sweetener, is believed to prevent tooth decay by inhibiting the growth of bacteria that cause cavities. Giving youngsters a syrup containing the sugar substitute may make them less likely to develop early childhood cavities known as baby bottle tooth decay or nursing cavities. Severe tooth decay in early childhood can become a lifelong problem. In a recent study, just 24.2 percent of 9 to 15 month olds receiving two doses of xylitol per day for nearly a year had tooth decay, compared with 51.7 percent in a control group. More... Discuss

S.A. Andrée Attempts to Reach the North Pole by Balloon (1897)

After gaining funding from the likes of King Oscar II and Alfred Nobel and generating widespread public interest, Swedish explorer Salomon August Andrée and two companions departed from Norway's Svalbard for the North Pole in a hydrogen balloon. They flew for two days before a hydrogen leak grounded the balloon, forcing the poorly equipped trio to travel on the pack ice.
