Because of its low toxicity, good pharmacokinetics (eventually being approved for once-daily use) and the Pact that 3TC-resistant HIV was less fit and mutated more slowly than wild-type HIV, 3TC eventually became the most commonly used drug in HIV combination therapy.
Until the studies began, the combination of AZT and 3TC offered the best chance of extending life, but these two drugs offered little chance of reducing the virus to undetectable levels.
