| AIDS dementia complex (ADC) is one of the most common CNS
complications among individuals with a diagnosis of AIDS (Price, 1995). In addition, macrophages
are the main infected cells in organs such as the brain and lungs, and
appear to be responsible for inflammation and injury in these sites,
which lead to neurological dysfunction and AIDS Dementia Complex (ADC),
or pulmonary inflammation and Lymphoid Interstitial Pneumonitis (LIP). Lipton, Director of the Laboratory of Cellular and
Molecular Neuroscience at Children's Hospital, said,
"Excessive activation of the glutamate type of NMDA receptors
appears to play a role in neuronal injury and death in a variety of
pathologic conditions including chronic neurodegenerative disorders such
as AIDS dementia complex. |
