Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) for commercial vessels are similar to what radio transponders are for aircraft--using VHF radio frequencies, AIS send and receive data, such as vessel direction, speed, and identification in hopes of avoiding collisions.
Retailers can use AIS networks to send a dedicated phone number to each customer, who can call the number and make a settlement using either an interactive voice response system or WAP.
