An autonomous republic of northwest Georgia bordering on Russia and the Black Sea. Georgian troops were forced to withdraw from the region in 1993 after a yearlong war with secessionist rebels.

ANKARA, Sep 9, 2009 (TUR) -- Turkish ship captain Coskun Mehmet Ozturk who was arrested by Georgian Coast Guard in August for carrying fuel oil to Abkhasia was released Tuesday.
Georgia claims that Russia was expanding and accelerating support for secessionists in both South Ossetia and Abkhasia, especially preceding and following the large Russian military exercises in the region, dubbed Caucasus Frontier 2008, during July.
Russians find it odd that having become independent of Russia, the Georgian Government refuse to allow South Ossetia and Abkhasia to return to their roots.
