Briefly, quinones in the samples were derivatized and evaporated to approximately 50 [micro]L under nitrogen; then, 100 mg zinc, anhydrous tetrahydrofuran, and 200 [micro]L acetic anhydride were added to samples.
They exposed it to a compound called acetic anhydride, which reacted only with the nitrogen in epibatidine, changing it slightly so it could be separated from the sample's impurities.
Governments must emphasize identification of major traffickers and seize their assets, and curtail availability of acetic anhydride for heroin production, the Board concludes.
