The race is superbly organised by the Achille Ratti climbing club whose motto 'Ad Altiora' translates as 'To strive for the highest' - very appropriate for anyone taking on this great race.
Both Achille Ratti (Pius XI) and Eugenio Pacelli (Pius XII) were adamant foes of racism; neither one ever published an official document discouraging Catholics from interracial marriage, in spite of what the anonymous article in the Osservatore assumed.
