A city of southern Turkey on the Seyhan River near the Mediterranean Sea. Probably founded by the Hittites, it was colonized by the Romans in 66 b.c. Population: 1,130,000.

After the showdown between Turkey and Syria in 1997 due to the latter's support for the PKK, which culminated in Turkey warning Syria to halt its support or face the (military) consequences, Syria stepped back and on 20 October, 1998 signed an agreement in Adana that brought a new hope for better ties.
