| Variations in the range of Adelie penguins along one section of
Antarctica's coast during the past 45,000 years are a keen
indicator of climate change there, a new study suggests. A foldout map in the middle of the 49-page hardcover shows the trek
taken by Mumble and the adelie penguins he meets, telling that part of
the story more completely than the movie does. Similarly, around the
Antarctic Peninsula, Adelie penguins, which winter on increasingly
scarce sea ice, are being displaced by chinstrap penguins, which prefer
open water, just as elephant seals are pushing aside their cold-loving
cousins, the crabeater seals. |
