Aegean Sea
An arm of the Mediterranean Sea off southeast Europe between Greece and Turkey. The numerous Aegean Islands dotting the sea include the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, and the Sporades. Most of the islands belong to Greece.

As another example, I noted that the May, 2005, issue of the Elsevier journal "Tectonophysics" contains papers on the following diverse geographic areas: Aegean Sea, Japan, Greece, Morocco, Canada, Chile, Australia, Switzerland, California, France, and Central America (the 12th paper is not region specific).
A combat group of the 2nd Parachute Rifle Regiment, right in the wake of Italy's capitulation, attacked from the air the Italian High Command headquarters near Monte Rotondo; subunits of the 7th regiment were landed by glider in the area of Gran Sasso in order to free Mussolini, and they also occupied the island of Elba; another combat group staged a surprise air assault to seize the island of Levros in the Aegean Sea.
In the eastern Mediterranean, for example, it was only because of one FAO's unique access to Greek and Turkish military leaders that agreements could be reached to reduce tensions in the Aegean Sea and on Cyprus, which lowered the potential for conflict between these two NATO allies.
