THE paradox of living in our affluent society is that while we have
more than ever to be grateful for, the need for our gratitude becomes
less immediately obvious. The fight for democracy in the Second World War, and the
construction of an affluent society after it, were based on the fossil
energy we exploited by scaling Hubbert's Peak (Deffeyes, 2001).
Consumerism and materialism won't fill the spiritual emptiness so
many in an affluent society experience. |
