In nine essays derived from the namesake project at the Vaxjo University, Sweden, campus of Olaussen (English) and Angelfors (French), Africanists discuss images of Europe presented in African literatures written in English or French in the context of the current postcolonial studies' focus on the interdependence of white European male power structures and the Other.
It is not true, as some scholars already have noted in response to Kitching, that Africanists are unconcerned with postcolonial African societies, or have failed to write about them.
Fuglestad argued that by constantly trying to prove that Africa's history witnessed strong parallels with Europe's and instead of redefining what constitutes "purposive" history, many Africanists unwittingly bought into Trevor-Roper's paradigm of history.
