With Mr Chawla's Ailantus Hotel group, which also includes hotels in Cheshire, Oldham, Manchester and Yorkshire, on target to hit an annual turnover of pounds 12m he is looking to achieve sales of pounds 15m by 2015.
The hotel expansion comes after it was taken over 18 months ago by the Ailantus chain, which is based in Newcastle and has other hotels in Cheshire, Leeds and Manchester.
Mike Chawla, who runs Ailantus Hotels which includes the George Washington Hotel, Golf & Country Club in Washington, paid an undisclosed sum for the Quality Hotel in Boldon near Sunderland.
