This, combined with an air frost with minus temperatures, blows the freezing air into voids and cracks where water pipes are located, causing them to partially or totally freeze.
Temperatures will dip significantly overnight and there will be an air frost first thing, which will clear fairly swiftly to make way for prolonged sunny spells.
If an air frost coats them they look like mop heads made of spun sugar.
