An enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of ethanol to acetaldehyde, the first step in the metabolism of alcohol by the liver.

The by-product of alcohol metabolism that does most damage and is responsible for the majority of the negative after-effects of excessive alcohol consumption is acetaldehyde.
It is actually a combination of dehydration, the toxic byproducts of alcohol metabolism, vitamin and sugar depletion, and the fact you have recently taken an overdose of a depressant drug (hence the jittery feelings).
They found that rats bred to crave alcohol drank 50 per cent less for over a month after being injected with viruses engineered to disrupt alcohol metabolism.
