(Earth Sciences / Minerals) a rare black or brown mineral consisting of the hydrated silicate of calcium, aluminium, iron, cerium, lanthanum, and other rare earth minerals. It occurs in granites and other igneous rocks. Formula: (Ca,Ce,La,Y)2(Al,Fe,Be,Mn,Mg)3(SiO4)3(OH)

Allanite is the host rare earth minerai and occurs mainly as finely disseminated grains throughout the rock.
The REEs at Hoidas Lake are hosted in the phosphate mineral apatite and the silicate mineral allanite.
The crystals occur in a swarm of closely spaced quartz [+ or -] siderite [+ or -] fluorite [+ or -] allanite veins that fill tension gashes in a Mississippian-age (~360 Ma) syenite stock.
