Alzheimer's disease  (älsh-mrz)
A progressive, degenerative disease of the brain, commonly affecting the elderly, and associated with the development of amyloid plaques in the cerebral cortex. It is characterized by confusion, disorientation, memory failure, speech disturbances, and eventual dementia. The cause is unknown. Alzheimer's disease is named for its identifier, German psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer (1864-1915).

She suffered from Alzhiemer's disease and when she was struck down with a chest infection earlier this month, friends say she took the decision to end her own life by stopping eating.
For example, if the preexisting condition in this case had been Alzhiemer's Disease and the decedent had been admitted to treat a broken nose, it would have been difficult, if not impossible, for the plaintiff to show that the fall and subsequent heart attacks were caused by the disease in combination with the defendant's negligence.
Sydney George Tovey, is charged with touching an eight-year-old girl in a sexual manner but the court heard the defence claim he suffers from Alzhiemer's disease and did not know what he was doing.
