| Three were herbivores--the western
horse, the ancient bison, and the 2-meter-tall Harlan's ground
sloth-and four were predators--the dire wolf, the saber-toothed cat, the
North American lion, and the coyote. Kelly Darraugh, 29, of Reseda, a mortgage underwriter for a
Pasadena firm who's gone on archeological digs in her spare time
since she was 12, recalls the thrill last summer of unearthing the
partial skull of a North American lion, estimated to be about 30,000
years old. Last year alone, teams of mostly volunteer excavators recovered
more than 1,000 fossils, including saber-toothed cat skulls, and bones
of a bear, sloths and a North American lion. |
