1. (Physics / General Physics) Optics
a.  an image or drawing distorted in such a way that it becomes recognizable only when viewed in a specified manner or through a special device
b.  the process by which such images or drawings are produced
2. (Life Sciences & Allied Applications / Biology) the evolution of one type of organism from another by a series of gradual changes

Recently restorers discovered that the skull's nose bone does not fit the correct anamorphic projection, and in fact conceals a number of other, equally incorrect attempts, none of which seem to be by Holbein.
Their new home is a wide open space flooded with light and decorated with bright shocks of navigational flower wallpaper, an anamorphic projection of the Trial of Galileo and a carpet patterned with the DNA's double helix.
We read of anamorphic projection in The Ambassadors, but not of the paradox it generates (as Peter Parshall noted, one must "un-see" the portraits in order properly to see the projected item).
