1. The connection of separate parts of a branching system to form a network, as of leaf veins, blood vessels, or a river and its branches.
2. Medicine The surgical connection of separate or severed tubular hollow organs to form a continuous channel, as between two parts of the intestine.

Some reported complications include injury to the spleen, azygos vein laceration, chylothorax, recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, anastomotic leaks, cardiac abnormalities, pleural injury, and tears to the posterior tracheal wall.
Initial results were disappointing, since several patients died postoperatively of anastomotic leaks, dehiscence, and fistulization.
Light microscopy showed a well developed neointima lining the anastomotic region of the graft without apparent lumenal reduction.
