Major depressive disorder is characterized by at least 4 of the following symptoms: depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure in most activities, change in weight or appetite, increased or decreased sleep, increased or decreased psychomotor activity, fatigue or anergia, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, decreased ability to think, and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide.
This disabling anergia becomes evident when CMP clients "completely lose their initiative and zeal for work" (Blumer and Heilbronn, 1981).
