Invented i n 1824 by German doctor Johann Siegert and named after a t ow n i n Ve n e z u e l a , Angostura bitters are made from a secret recipe of herbs, barks, roots, spices and rum.
Best known as a concoction to jazz up cocktails, Angostura bitters is infused with an aura of mystery dating back to the days of Simon Bolivar.
So making the most of our new found freedom (the lodger has moved out) I took myself off to the spare room with my new book, a pint of lemon, lime and Angostura Bitters and the promise of a good night's sleep.
