In a divergent beam diffractometer these include the angular aperture of the divergence slit, the width and axial length of the receiving slit, the angular apertures of the axial Soller slits, the length and projected width of the x-ray source, the absorption coefficient and axial length of the sample.
From the practical point of view, each couple of parallel foils of length d and spacing s is equivalent to a set of narrow slits of angular aperture arctan(d/s); their filtering effect depends not only on the incidence angle of the beam, but also on the relative position of the beam with respect to the entrance section (a beam very close to one of the foils is not totally equivalent to a ray arriving in the middle between two foils).
