A town of north-central Sri Lanka north-northeast of Colombo. The ancient capital of Sinhalese kings of Ceylon, it has extensive ruins and is a Buddhist pilgrimage center. Population: 53,200.

In the first instance, the Sinhalese pointed toward their ancient civilization in the Anuradhapura region, in the North Central Province, and claimed ancestral rights of occupation, though at the bureaucratic levels, officials also referred to high population density in the west and south to justify Dry Zone resettlement.
