On 25 April 1915, now known as ANZAC Day, British, French, Australian, New Zealand and Newfoundland troops landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula, supported by a naval bombardment.
But as Australia's first trial by fire in the international arena, the Gallipoli landing become inextricably linked with our sense of nationhood, and ANZAC Day developed almost religious overtones.
They formed a Niue Returned Servicemen's Association, constructed war memorials and rolls of honour on the island's village greens, and organized annual Remembrance Services and ANZAC Day parades.
