With Samuel Huntington's "clash of civilizations" raging away ever more apocalyptically, it's no surprise that religion in general and Islam in particular have been coming under hostile scrutiny of late, if not in academe, at least in the media and the blogosphere. Meanwhile, Chigurh, with his stun-gun stalking and coin-flipping nihilism, seems to be an update on the apocalyptically evil Judge from Blood Meridian. Donovan Hill's visceral montage 'brisbanemustburn' showed flames of aboriginal land burning apocalyptically lapping the Brisbane beachfront as nature finally takes revenge for historic abuses of ecology. |
