Apostolic king

a title granted by the pope to the kings of Hungary on account of the extensive propagation of Christianity by St. Stephen, the founder of the royal line. It is now a title of the emperor of Austria in right of the throne of Hungary.

On November 11, 1918, just as western Europe was going wild with joy as the armistice brought the 1914-1918 holocaust to an end, Karl, Emperor of Austria and Apostolic King of Hungary, signed (in pencil) a note proclaiming his withdrawal from government, and soon afterwards went into exile in Switzerland.
] Editor's Note: Karl, Emperor of Austria and Apostolic King of Hungary, died in exile in Madeira in 1922.
