The guidelines ensure that new construction and alterations of existing facilities conform to the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Architectural Barriers Act.
The Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) requires buildings and facilities that are constructed by or on behalf of, or leased by the United States, or buildings financed, in whole or in part, by a grant or loan made by the United States to be accessible to people with disabilities.
The board was created by Congress in 1973 in an effort to ensure that federal buildings honor the letter and spirit of the Architectural Barriers Act.
