We can see this preference for a scientific approach to magic in the courses taught at Hogwarts--the precise recipes used in the "subtle science and exact art" of Potions (Stone 136), the importance of proper pronunciation and correct wand-work in Transfigurations and Charms, the esoteric mathematical formulae in Hermione's favorite subject Arithmancy, the careful observation and map-labeling of Astronomy, all contrasted with the untrustworthy fuzziness of Divination.
They do not study Divination, Arithmancy or Defence Against The Dark Arts, favouring instead subjects like maths, English, languages, science and arts.
HOGWARTS TODAY At Hogwarts, the students study Transfiguration (changing objects into other things), Charms, Defence Against The Dark Arts, Potions, Divination, Muggle Studies, Arithmancy, Runes, Herbology, Care Of Magical Creatures, Astronomy and History Of Magic - the only subject taught by a ghost.
