1935 Ochs dies and is succeeded by his son-in-law, Arthur Hays Sulzberger.
The boys were educated at Horace Mann—as were Arthur Hays Sulzberger (Ochs’ son-in-law and successor as publisher) and Cyrus Sulzberger (Arthur Hays Sulzberger’s nephew and a Times columnist).
The friendship Reston developed with Arthur Hays Sulzberger, the Times publisher, served him well on the way up, as he had to fend off Arthur Krock, the imperious Washington bureau chief.
