During the 20th centuary, the concept of an "Aryan race" was taken as national pride by Nazis, who put Aryan race on top of the racial hierarchy as the only race capable of creating civilizations.
Other historical figures also looked down upon makeup, including Adolf Hitler who felt that makeup was beneath women of the Aryan race.
Long was one of several athletes held up as a symbol of Hitler's supposedly superior Aryan race but his actions appeared to demonstrate his dismissal of that notion, giving Owens advice which, ultimately, led to the American's victory and the German settling for silver.
