The capital of Turkmenistan, in the south-central part of the country near the border of Iran. It was founded as a fortress in 1881. A major earthquake in 1948 virtually destroyed the old city. Population: 797,000.

It was Ashgabat that initiated negotiations between the Afghan factions, an important contribution to the overall efforts of the international community aimed at stabilization of the region.
Ashgabat is famous throughout Central Asia for its large outdoor market, which is open three days a week.
We also obtained agreement to refuel aircraft at the Dushanbe and Ashgabat airports.
