The capital of Turkmenistan, in the south-central part of the country near the border of Iran. It was founded as a fortress in 1881. A major earthquake in 1948 virtually destroyed the old city. Population: 797,000.

Summary: TEHRAN (FNA)- Officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran are due to attend a workgroup meeting in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan to discuss the legal regime of the Caspian Sea.
Deputy Foreign Minister Baktygul Kalambekova on Thursday attended the first consultative meeting of the states-signatories to the treaty on a zone free of nuclear weapons in Central Asia, which took place in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, reported the press service of the Kyrgyz Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The signing of protocol for gas supply and the Turkmenistans offer to export electricity were made during the first session of the Pakistan-Turkmenistan Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan on August 3-4, 2009.
