An ancient empire and civilization of western Asia in the upper valley of the Tigris River. In its zenith between the ninth and seventh centuries b.c. the empire extended from the Mediterranean Sea across Arabia and Armenia.

The discovery of the city provides valuable historic information showing that the borders of the Middle Assyrian Empire stretched up to the lower Khabour River, and that the city's main role was the protection of the empire's western front.
One group say they should be known as Assyrians, a reference to the ancient Assyrian empire that once spanned parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria over 2,500 years ago.
Nimrud, the center of the great Assyrian empire under Ashurnasirpal II, is located in present-day Iraq, and a number of leading Iraqi archaeologists are included among the contributors.
