ACAD post-doctoral researcher Dr Kefei Chen has since used the approach to analyse the genomes of the extinct aurochs, the ancestor of modern cattle, as well as early domestic cattle from China, Russia and Europe as part of a research program funded by the Australian Research Council.
Heck cattle, imported to Devon from Germany, are the results of a selective breeding programme initially started by Herman Goering, head of the Nazi Luftwaffe, as an attempt to recreate the ancient auroch cattle.
The auroch - which had been hunted to extinction throughout Europe by the early 1600s - had not been seen on British soil for more than 4000 years before farmer Derek Gow decided to bring them back.
