From its establishment in 1775 until its destruction, the Awadh court at Lucknow was an oasis of richesse and refinement, spawning a distinctive 'nawabi' style of architecture that fused Oriental motifs with colonial grandeur. He is able to trace the complex and often traumatic negotiations over curricular content and teaching methods that evolved in pedagogical settings like the Dars-i-Nizamiyya, as Mughal power was supplanted by the Shia nawabs of Awadh, the various phases of colonial rule, and finally the prospect of post-colonial regimes.
