During the 1940s, the Soviets deported nearly 500,000 Balts to the gulag archipelago, the Communist prison system in Siberia.
It may to some extent be surprising that these groups (with the exception of Ukrainians and Balts, who tended to support the PCs) have generally voted Liberal.
A large number of North American Balts then returned to serve in the governments of their newly independent homelands--even at the highest levels.
