| Bandelier National Monument set the fire during our driest and windiest season, and a lack of coordination amongst various federal agencies allowed it to get out of control. Ancient Dwellings of the Southwest, written by Derek Gallagher and illustrated by Sally Blakemore, uses the magic of elaborate pop-up art to explain the histories of some of the most famous early American Indian ruins, including those at Chaco Canyon and Bandelier National Monument. For example, more than 25,000 residents of Los Alamos, New Mexico, were forced to flee a towering wall of flames that was ignited when National Park Service officials at Bandelier National Monument set a controlled burn in May 2000. |
