99 JOHN Dortmunder is a small-time New York crook with a barful of likeable friends and accomp lices and an impossible commission.
The suspicion that noting that queasiness to a barful of other Americans would inspire a suddenly realigned proboscis only adds to a sense that we are entering a post-September 11 twilight zone.
The only scene that entertains is the first one, in which the hero's nonviolent pal, played by Steve Buscemi, keeps a barful of toughs spellbound by a tall tale as he cadges beers from a grumpy bartender.
