Built of soft limestone or tough granite with round or slightly pointed arches and barrel vaults, these houses of worship form a dense network that reflected the spiritual movement that swept through medieval Charente. Complete with tapering brick barrel vaults, brick walls, and brick niches, they sought to reapply the tectonic eloquence that had made the material assembly and formal intensity of Lewerentz's characterful spaces virtually inseparable. The latter can be used to create sloping facades and glazed roofs as well as barrel vaults, pyramids and lantern lights. |
