Bass Strait  (bs)
A channel between Tasmania and southeast Australia connecting the Indian Ocean with the Tasman Sea. Its discovery in 1798 by the British explorer George Bass (died c. 1812) proved that Tasmania was not part of the Australian continent.

The Bass Strait in Australia, south of Melbourne, is a case in point.
Although race officials did finally receive the faxed storm warning, 22 hours before the sailors reached the treacherous waters and gale force winds in Bass Strait, they failed to grasp the severity of it, and did not inform the race boats.
