Bate·son  (btsn), William 1861-1926.
British biologist who was one of the founders of the science of genetics. He experimentally proved Gregor Mendel's theories on heredity and published the first English translation of Mendel's work in 1900.

However, drawing on the work of Bateson (1979), Patton and McMahon (1999) indicated that an additional form of problem solving, called "abductive reasoning," should be used.
Based on this notion, Hui and Bateson (1991) proposed, tested, and found empirical support for the idea that consumers would rate a service encounter more favorably when they perceived that they had more control over the situation.
