The capital of Belize, in the north-central part of the country. It became the capital in 1970 after a hurricane devastated Belize City (1961). Population: 16,400.

BELMOPAN, Belize -- Speednet, a new wireless operator in Belize, has selected Nortel Networks (NYSE:NT)(TSX:NT) as the exclusive provider of a third-generation (3G) wireless infrastructure to bring advanced mobile voice and data services to Speednet's customers throughout Belize.
The new deployment will also meet broadband demands of business and residential users in Belize City and the capital, Belmopan.
