Con·stant de Re·becque  (kô-stä d r-bk), Benjamin 1767-1830.
French writer and politician who was exiled in 1802 for denouncing Napoleon's machinations. He is best known for the novel Adolphe (1816), inspired by his affair with Madame de Staël.

As the Swiss-born nobleman, thinker, writer, and French politician Benjamin Constant pointed out some 200 years ago, freedom in the ancient world was the right to participate in the making of laws.
Wolfe cites Benjamin Constant to the effect that we "ought to be governed by constitutions to avoid being governed by emotions.
To frame his discussion, Breyer draws on the work of the Swiss-born political theorist Benjamin Constant, who famously contrasted "modern liberty" (the negative liberty to be free from government coercion) with "ancient liberty" (the liberty of participatory democracy).
