Before 1500, Shawandithit's Algonkian-speaking Beothuks lived a bountiful life in Newfoundland, hunting caribou inland and venturing to the coast to harpoon whales and seals, spear fish, and collect mussels and other shellfish.
When Newfoundland was first colonised there were around 2,000 Beothuks, but their numbers were soon in freefall, from killings, loss of hunting grounds, and disease.
Outports, shipwrecks, Beothuks, and domestic details--they're all there in this fine old home on the hill.
