Plants and flowers in the Quilted Velvet Garden: BETULA pendula 'Purpurea' - This form of native Silver Birch was selected for the dark grey-silver bark and the vibrant purple leaves.
Our native silver birch, Betula pendula, is very variable in its habit, often defying its species name and having analmost upright appearance.
A little behind, the whole scene was further enhanced by a close planting of silver birch saplings: not our usual Betula pendula, but a form of the Himalayan birch, Betula utilis var.
