22) The appearance of Darwin's Origin of Species in 1859 had not created an immediate rift within American theology because previous evolutionary schemes had been theologically accommodated even by many biblicists. Given their eighteenth- and nineteenth-century perspectives, it seems that in the minds of many biblicists, the ancient apocalypticists with their eschatological hopes were essentially authors of fiction who proceeded in a manner quite similar to modern, literate science-fiction authors. If it were a matter of theology, surely biblicists would notice the problems. |
