Carlyle protests against "the torpid blockheadism, the gross ignorance, dilettantism, infidelity and damnability, of [scholarly books] and their editors in general" (19:29), but he would have no grounds for complaint in terms of this collection; I note only a single letter missing from these volumes, the 18 June 1846 draft of Carlyle's 19 June letter to Sir Robert Peel.
