body wave
A seismic wave that travels through the Earth rather than across its surface. Body waves usually have smaller amplitudes and shorter wavelengths than surface waves and travel at higher speeds. Primary waves and secondary waves are body waves. Compare surface wave.

The underground test was recorded by the Australian Seismological Center and the Australian Geological Survey Organization as having a body wave magnitude of 5.
