Second, the cages themselves likely reduced predation rates by limiting the access of predators such as large blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus (although some were found inside the cages) and cownose rays, Rhinoptera bonasus.
Unfortunately, cultch-less spat are highly susceptible to predation, and significant predation by cow-nosed rays (Rhinoptera bonasus, Mitchill, 1815) and blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus, Rathbun, 1896) at a number of deployment sites including the Great Wicomico River has been reported anecdotally in the popular press.
